Iceland - Day 6

Description

Robin drove.
Hiked the Grabrok crater (~350 stair steps).
Hiked about the Kola gorge.
Visit Hvammstangi Icelandic Seal Center.
Dinner was freeze dried Meat Lasagna and Tibetan Curry in our room.

Details

We headed north in the morning. Along the way we decided to hike up Grabrok Crater and it was well worth the stop. It was a beautiful sunny day and the views from the crater were fantastic.
Next stop was Hvammstangi on the Vatnes Peninsula. We visited the Icelandic Seal Center which was quite interesting. We asked the guy in the seal center about a short hike and he recommended the Kola Gorge. This was not in any guidebooks and it was a beautiful place to stop and hike. We proceeded to the next peninsula and our destination for the night, Blonduos. This was the booking I made late after discovering a mistake in the reservations. It turned out to be a beautiful place. The owners have converted an old garage into a lovely small hotel. They are real foodies. There were cookbooks everywhere and I guess they have written a couple. The room was very pretty. No private bathroom but they provided kimonos for the guests. There was a great bathtub in the shared bathroom and I enjoyed a bath. In the morning we had breakfast in front of a huge window overlooking the ocean. We heard that we might see a whale but we didn’t see one. We talked to the delightful young lady who was serving breakfast, Yvonna from Poland. She is working in Iceland for 4 months before resuming her business studies back home.
