We left Höfn and drove west toward Vik. First stop was the Skaftafell Glacier and Svartifoss (black) Waterfall. Rather than just doing the out and back hike, we did a big loop. The waterfall is very unique with lots of basalt columns which were formed as lava cooled. Then we proceeded to Sxxxx overlook where we had lunch and enjoyed a beautiful view of Skaftafell Glacier. We also saw Sel, an old farmhouse now owned by the government. We hiked back somehow escaping the rain that kept looking imminent. Our last stop (before Vik) was the ancient Fjadarglifur Canyon. We took a hike to the end of the canyon, gawking at the views. We made it to our lodging in Vik just before dark.
At about 11:30 Kevin went out and saw the northern lights were visible! This was very exciting! We watched and took pictures for half an hour til they dissipated.
